What Car Rental Insurance Coverage Options Available in Barbados?

Car Rental Insurance Coverage Options Available in Barbados

1. Third Party Liability Insurance (TPL)

Third-Party Liability Insurance (TPL) provides third party personal injury coverage by covering you from financial liability if you are involved in an accident causing personal injury or property damage to third parties.

For example, if you hit another vehicle, TPL will pay for medical expenses or vehicle repairs for up to no cap in terms of third-party insurance. But it does not cover rental-car damage, theft, injuries or belongings.

Report it immediately after an accident. Drive Barbados also recommends obtaining details from any witnesses but without admitting fault.

2. Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) / Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) / Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is an insurance option covering repair costs if your rental vehicle gets damaged in a collision, regardless of fault.

This coverage includes bodywork damage like dents and damage to bumpers or panels.

In Barbados, CDW is often included in the rental price, with daily insurance rates ranging from US$ 15 to US$ 20, depending on vehicle type and duration. You pay a deductible for damages, between US$ 250 – US$ 500 for small cars and US$ 500 – US$ 2,000 for larger vehicles. Vehicle damage due to intentional acts, negligence, or allowing an unauthorized driver voids coverage.

CDW doesn’t cover vehicle theft, rims, tyres, windshield, keys, or undercarriage damages, nor does it apply off paved roads.

3. Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) or Full Damage Waiver (FDW)

Consider taking the Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) or Full Damage Waiver (FDW) when renting a car in Barbados. These comprehensive insurance plans protect you from high costs in case of damage to or theft of the hire car.

These waivers typically cover the body’s exterior, underside, glass, tyres, and engine. Suppose you want super protection, zero deductible, or US$0.00 excess.

SCDW is available at a daily rate of about US$25 to US$30.

However, exceptions exist; if you drive recklessly or violate the rental contract, the waiver likely won’t apply. Additional coverage is needed for items left inside the car.

4. Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)

Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) helps cover medical fees and benefits in the event of an accident causing injury or death to the driver and passengers.

Typically, PAI is included with comprehensive insurance policies but is not in third-party policies.

Remember all rental company conditions and rules, as irresponsible acts like driving under the influence or letting an unauthorized driver void the policy. While PAI helps with accident-related expenses, it does not cover personal belongings.

5. Theft Protection (TP) and Fire Protection (FP)

TP (Theft Protection) ensures your hire vehicle remains safe from theft or fire. It also protects you from additional expenses related to the vehicle. Still, it does not cover personal belongings, like cameras and bags.

In Barbados, the deductible ranges from US$ 250 to US$ 2,000. You can reduce this deductible to zero by choosing Super Cover insurance. Following the rental policies is acts of negligence, like leaving the keys in the ignition, can void your coverage for theft. Be sure to notify the police and your rental company of any theft within 24 hours to maintain your insurance protection.

6. Tyre Insurance \ Wheels and Underbody

Tyre insurance offers an economical way to protect against possible tyre punctures & replacements. Basic insurance, such as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), commonly exclude damage to a vehicle’s tyres, wheels, and undercarriage.

7. Roadside Assistance Cover

Drive Barbados offers roadside assistance 17 hours a day, 7 days a week, at no extra cost. This package includes assistance for lockouts, flat tyres, jump starts, or emergency fuel for US$3 per day.

Remember that the client is responsible for replacing tyres or rims damaged beyond repair and lost keys due to vehicle driver neglect.

You may face additional service costs if you decline to purchase this extended assistance plan.

Key Loss or Damage

You’re responsible for key replacement and unlocking service costs if you lose or damage your hire car keys. We can deliver a spare if the keys are locked inside, but fees vary by distance. Key fobs are not waterproof, so water damage also leads to replacement charges.

Note: That there are no refunds if this coverage goes unused and can’t be cancelled during the rental period.

Personal Belongings

Knowing the insurance terms of hire is important when renting a vehicle. The policy usually applies to the car but not personal items inside the car, such as cameras, wallets, etc.

You are responsible for the loss, if you lose these items. Most car hire insurance policies won’t cover this kind of loss, so taking precautions to reduce risk is advisable.

Check with your insurance policies or credit card protections in advance to see if coverage exists for loss of personal property while hiring a car.

Traffic Fines

During the rental period, the hirer is fully responsible for any traffic fines incurred and not the rental company. Know local driving laws to avoid unnecessary fines and liabilities.

Note: Illegal parking in Bridgetown incurs a fee of US$25 and an additional handling charge of US$25.

How to claim insurance on credit card?

Some credit cards and websites include collision coverage, but they often have limitations.

To use the insurance, you must decline the rental company’s CDW and pay the rental with the credit card offering the coverage. Clients should check the policy details to know what’s included. The renter is still responsible for up to US$ 2,000 if damage occurs.

When CDW, EW, or SDW is declined, a US$ 1,000 pre-authorization hold is placed on your card, which the client’s financial institution releases after the vehicle is returned in good condition.

To file a car rental insurance claim through your credit card in Barbados:

First,

  • Report the Incident: Check for injuries; call emergency services if needed. Contact the rental company and the police
  • Document Everything:  Share contact and insurance details and get witness information. Take photos and vehicle damage
  • Gather Documents: Collect all receipts, the rental agreement, the police report and a police shoulder badge.
  • Contact your credit card company: Provide all necessary documents. Contact the card’s provider if you used a credit card with insurance, and offer proof of payment with the card.
  • File the Claim: Submit your claim with the required documents and follow specific procedures.
  • Follow-up: Maintain communication with all parties to ensure timely processing.

Note: Driving under the influence voids your coverage.
