Steps to Car Collection With a Debit Card
Here are clear steps to hire a car in Barbados without a credit card:
Step 1: Filter Your Search
Explore the search options to see which ones allow you to identify rental agencies willing to accept a debit card as payment and narrow your options down to companies that meet your payment preferences.
Step 2: Research Insurance Options
Look for ways to reduce insurance excess and security deposit amount requirements. Allow you to pay by debit card at pick-up, which saves time and less money upfront.
Step 3: Be Aware of Required Fees
When picking up your vehicle, expect the rental company to reserve funds or charge your card for:
These include,
- Insurance Excess: A safety deposit against a damaged or stolen vehicle. The amount depends on the car model.
- Fuel Deposit: A deposit for a full tank of gas, which you’ll get back when you return the car with a full tank.
Payment Method Details:
Credit Cards: the company will place a pre-authorization hold for the insurance excess and fuel deposit. The available balance has no immediate impact, as removing the hold occurs when you return the car.
Debit Cards: The hire company will deduct amounts for the insurance excess and the fuel deposit from your account. They will return these funds after you return the car safely and meet all required conditions.
Here are the debit and credit cards currently accepted as payment for Drive Barbados:
- American Express
- Discover
- MasterCard
- Visa
Renting a car with Cash:
Some Independent companies like Drive Barbados are willing to accommodate cash-only rental customers.
So if you plan to hire a car in Bridgetown without a VISA, DISCOVER or MasterCard, make sure you’ve got extra money stowed for the car rental. If you’re traveling, make sure you have a separate car hire money pool; otherwise, you might have very little pocket money left.
Be sure to have extra money still for the car rental insurance. If you choose to pay using cash or a debit card, you might be required to leave a deposit. The said deposit will be refunded to you once you return the vehicle. Deposits can be around $500.
We accept two types of currencies, including US Dollars (USD), British Pounds (GBP)
Note: Drive Barbados offers car rental discounts for persons who use cash car rental options. You will automatically receive a 5% cash discount on your rate.
Split billing option:
Drive Barbados also offers a split billing payment option, which provides billing flexibility in managing funds during your car hire process.
Customers who want to split their personal travel expenses between two different credit/debit cards can split the rental charges in one of the following ways.
- Rental Bill amount
- Extension rental days
- Vehicle upgrades
- Add-ons, such as sat nav, baby seat
Car Hire: Excess, Security Deposits, and Insurance Explained
Understanding car rental insurance can be overwhelming. The rental process often includes additional charges, including car hire, extras like child car seats, navigation systems, visi or driver permits, and insurance costs. Many rental companies hide substantial insurance excess and security deposit fees in their terms and conditions.
We offer three coverage levels: basic, essential, and premium, allowing you to choose the protection that best suits your needs.
At Drive Barbados Rent a Car, we offer flexible payment options beyond traditional credit card requirements.
Rental Vehicle Cover Options:
Insurance coverage for our rental cars provides third-party liability risk only. However, renters are responsible for a USD 500 deductible if damage occurs. The basic insurance excludes damage to tyres, rims, hubcaps, windshields, and interiors. Roadside assistance incurs additional charges.
Other rental companies may offer:
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Excess Waiver (EW): Reduces deductible to $250 at a cost of $15 per day but excludes damage to tyres, rims, hubcaps, windshields, interiors, and lost keys/fobs. Roadside assistance charges will apply.
Super Damage Waiver (SDW):
Offers zero deductible and roadside assistance for $25 per day. This waiver still does not cover keys or fuel costs.
Upon vehicle delivery, we place a USD 250 hold on the client’s credit card for both CDW/EW and SDW options. This hold is released at the end of your rental period if the vehicle is returned undamaged.
Coverage for Collisions by Credit Card Companies:
Credit card rental insurance companies may be valid but require upfront payment of damages up to USD 2,000 if an accident occurs.
Declining these waivers results in a USD 1,000 pre-authorization on your card, released upon damage-free vehicle return.
Optional roadside assistance:
Available at $3/day with 17/7 coverage and covers lockouts, jump starts, emergency fuel, and flat tyres. This service provides 17/7 protection across the island. Without this coverage, these services incur additional charges. Coverage is non-refundable; you cannot cancel it during the rental period.
Authorization Holds on Account Funds
When renting a car in Barbados, it’s important to understand the differences between debit cards over credit cards.
Using a debit card for your rental will result in a security authorization hold on your account.
Note: Funds will be unavailable for use during the rental period. The deposit will be released after you return the vehicle in the agreed-upon condition.
If you fail to meet the hire agreement terms — such as returning the car late — the rental company may put an extra hold on your account. The charges can include rental extensions or other fees such as cleaning and fuel charges.
